Estonian Fund for Nature organised latest EUROWA Basic course
Estonian Fund for Nature (ELF) recently organised an EUROWA BASIC Oiled Wildlife Responder Course in their latest efforts to improve oiled wildlife preparedness in Estonia. The course was organise between from 25 – 27 April in Lahemaa National Park, Koolimäe village. 19 volunteers were trained by the EUROWA qualified trainer Agni Kaldma, and received both theoretical and practical knowledge on how to retrieve oiled birds from the coast, take them to a beachhead collection point and rehydrate them.
In addition, the volunteers repaired the net-bottom cages owned by the Environmental Board of Estonia by applying waterproof varnish on the plywood and replacing the metal nets with soft ones. Furthermore, the volunteers had a chance to visit Artur Talvik, who is a former actor and a politician, and is now a member of volunteer marine rescue at Tapurla village. His team has received training for coastal oil spill cleanup and has the necessary equipment, which was shown to the visitors. On the way to Tapurla, ELF’s volunteers also had a lucky encounter with a sweet bear cub.
The EUROWA BASIC course is aimed at individuals with no previous experience who wish to assist in the rescue and rehabilitation of oiled birds. Attendees learn how to understand and implement basic wildlife response skills, which can be performed under supervision of experienced responders.
