Norway has experienced a significant number of oil spill incidents that affected (or threatened) oiled wildlife, which have lead to the start of a national oiled wildlife response planning process.

In the aftermath of the MS Server in 2007, the Norwegian Coastal Administration and Norwegian Directorate of Nature Management facilitated and funded an integrated oiled wildlife response as part of the oil spill response operations. A new policy was also adopted that year mandating contingency plans for all new oil and gas activities to include an emergency plan for oiled wildlife.

Having experienced a number of oil spill incidents since, most recently the Full City in 2009, Norwegian authorities are taking an increasing interest in developing oiled wildlife response planning at national level, strengthening their relationship with Norwegian NGOs through stakeholder meetings.
